Advanced Ion Exchange Celluloses (AIEC) have proved its applicability in a variety of tasks, which includes separation of charged biopolymers. Whether it’s ion exchange chromatography of proteins, antibodies, hormones, peptides, nucleic acids or variety of applications; AIEC and column chromatography products are being used extensively. The most commonly used functional groups are the Diethylaminoethyl Tertiary Amine and ether linked Carboxymethyl.

In medical field, ion exchange membranes are used as one of the separation membranes in artificial dialysis and electrodialysis. The process of ion exchange membrane is based on the Donnan membrane equilibrium principle, which dictates recovery of valuable ions, and flushing of undesirable ions from wastewater.

Ion exchange celluloses are known to have been used in the separation of bio-chemicals with ionic character. For the purpose of separation of small molecules, paper thin-layer forms of ion exchange membrane have been used. Column products have also been designed to handle large molecules.

After proving its usefulness in various industries, the applicability of ion exchange celluloses also came to be tested in other sectors.  The advent of ion exchange in the field of bio-chemistry yielded revolutionary results, and soon proved to be boon to the biochemists, and general public as well. In this series, the development and consequent use of synthetic ion exchange resin in kidney dialysis was a notable achievement of all times.

Cellulose membranes have replaced the natural mechanism of phospholipid-bilayer membranes in people who have undergone kidney dialysis. While natural kidneys use phospholipid-bilayer membranes to separate the components of the blood, artificial kidney uses cellulose membranes.

The insoluble nature of polymeric ion exchange resin plays a crucial role in making it possible to pass through gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed, when taken orally. In a malfunctioned kidney, sodium and calcium polystyrene sulfonate resin exchanges sodium for potassium in a colon, for treating the condition of hyperkalemia. Going by the versatility of ion exchange membranes in the medical field, its role in the therapeutic applications will further rise.

You can choose ion exchange membranes from the classification made here under:

  • Pre-swollen microgranular AIEC

It proves to be great asset in saving your time by doing away with the need for pre-cycling before the process of buffer equilibrium. It is characterized by its excellent resolution, high load capacity, and fast kinetics.

  • Dry microgranular AIEC

It is characterized by the same performance qualities as the pre-swollen AIEC after pre-cycling. It is used to bring down the chances of bacterial growth.

  • Fibrous AIEC

It is characterized by its capacity to support maximum throughput at high flow rates.

  • Anion and Cation exchange functional groups- Diethylaminoethyl Tertiary Amine (DEAE) and Carboxymethyl (CM). These are also the most commonly used.
  • Orthophosphate bi-functional Cation exchanger for separation of medium molecular weight molecules.
